15 When I was in Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed[a] me about him,[b] asking for a sentence of condemnation[c] against him. 16 I answered them[d] that it was not the custom of the Romans to hand over anyone[e] before the accused had met his accusers face-to-face[f] and had been given[g] an opportunity to make a defense against the accusation.[h] 17 So after they came back here with me,[i] I did not postpone the case,[j] but the next day I sat[k] on the judgment seat[l] and ordered the man to be brought.
